Therapies Explained

Traditional Therapies

Individual Counseling and Psychotherapy

People seek counseling for many reasons. Often this choice is made during a time of crisis, or when we realize the need to grow in our ability to handle a particular challenge.

During your first session you:

  • can expect assistance to more clearly define your issue or concern.
  • work with Kathleen to identify steps to take to address that concern.
  • receive assistance in deciding which treatment approach best serves your needs. This includes referral to another therapist or treatment center if necessary.

Family Therapy and Marital Therapy

Family relationships are a tremendous source of self-understanding, growth and transformation.

Family therapy:

  • focuses on understanding emotional difficulties as they relate to our family histories, including relationships with siblings, parents or ethnic traditions.
  • explores individual feelings and behavior, and how family relationships may influence them.
  • encourages the development and practice of effective communication skills.

Kathleen may work with the entire family, a couple, or an individual. It takes time for desired changes to become an integral part of your family’s daily life.

Sandplay

During therapy, adults often discover the ‘small child’ within who cannot say ‘where it hurts.’ This is especially true for those who suffered early trauma or emotional difficulties. Sandplay offers a non-verbal opportunity for expressing and healing deep inner hurts.

Sandplay includes:

  • creating a picture with wet or dry sand, miniatures, or other objects/
  • telling the story shown in the sand.

Creating the picture can be a very healing process in itself. Telling the ‘story’ allows Kathleen to better understand the client’s inner world and so facilitate healing or change. Click here for detailed information.
